The book Practical Statistics, in two volumes has been designed to cover a comprehensive course in statistics for the students of economics, statistics, commerce and the physical sciences. It presents a thorough treatment of statistical methods in such a way that a previous acquaintance with mathematics and statistics is not necessary. For the students of non-mathematical background, all the mathematical tools such as permutation, combination, set theory, factorial, etc. required for the study of probability have been properly dealt with. This book has been designed to be ‘ready to use’, i.e. it can be used even by those students who have not gone through any theoretical book on statistics. Each chapter begins with a brief introduction on the subject followed by formulae used, with explanation of terms. For better understanding of the subject, throughout the book, the lucidity of style and simplicity of expression have been maintained. The book is in two volumes and covers the entire syllabi prescribed for the statistics paper in undergraduate and postgraduate courses of Indian universities, as well as the courses prescribed in C.S.E. (Civil Service Examination), I.S.S. (Indian Statistical Service) and P.S.C.S. (Public Service Commission of State) examinations. A large number of solved problems have been given in each chapter with a view to helping the students in solving numerical problems and, thus, familiarising them with different type of formulae used in statistical analysis. At the end of each chapter, a large number of problems with answers have been given under the heading ‘Brain Teaser’, providing plenty of opportunity for practicing skill, developing a sound understanding of the subject, and enabling the students to acquire self-confidence. Most of the solved examples as well as practice problems under ‘Brain Teaser’ have been taken from the papers set by various universities in previous years as well as from the competitive examinations such as C.S.E., I.S.S., C.A., I.C.W.A., etc. The book will be indispensable for students and teachers of various disciplines where statistics is a part of the course and also for those who are preparing for various competitive examinations.
